FAQ

  • Are SolidWorks licenses free?

Yes — we provide our members with free licenses, but they require a (well-working) PC to run. If you would still like to use Solidworks but don't have a PC that meets system requirements, consider connecting remotely to the computer labs at Columbia where the computers have Solidworks free for student use. Directions are here.

You do not have to be a SEAS student to receive our licenses — you just have to be a member of our team.

  • What are the team plans/goals for 2023-2024? Design or competition?

Our focus this year is on taking our previous competition vehicle and making it fully rules compliant for next year, conduct shakedown testing to ensure everything is in working order, and make small improvements. All other design efforts will be spent on the 2025 competition vehicle. It should be a very fun semester of testing and design work!

  • I am on Slack and I am ready to begin helping. What should I do next?

Join Slack channels specific to your interests. Most of them are public, so you can go to Browse Channels and join some or all. You can respond to any threads that ask for new member help, join system meetings or work sessions when they happen, or DM system leads who can help get you started on a new project.

  • How much of a commitment is this club?

However much you decide to put in it is how much time you'll end up spending on it. Feel free to take up a lighter load with fewer projects or dedicate yourself to long-term projects where you can take a system from scratch to manufacturing and testing.
